Behind the recent hot streak, the Cubs have a “For Sale” tag on the franchise. Umm, a one billion for sale price tag. Headliners such as Sam Zell and Mark Cuban have been mentioned as possible suitors, however, the recent buzz is regarding Cubs fans. Yes, that’s right, the fans want in.
I was reading in the Chicago Sun-Times about one particular fan who is organizing motivation in putting together a group to purchase the Cubs. After reading the article, one would think this is the first effort by Cubs fans for such an objective. Not true.
About two weeks ago, I received an email from a group of Cubs fans who run www.letsbuythecubbies.com about their website and ultimate mission. I have a hunch that the guys who run this site are real fans, not a corporate suit (former option trader as mentioned in the Sun-Times article) who probably lives on the North Shore and couldn’t tell you the first thing about the Cubs. These guys are 22 year old die-hard fans.
How does it work? Well, on www.letsbuythecubbies.com, all you need to do is commit $200 for each share you wish to purchase. Once the total hits $600 million, the moderators of the website will contact each potential contributor to confirm the pledges and formalize an offer. As of today, the total is at $228,400.
I like the dedication and think its a great idea, however, I wonder if the people offering to purchase shares would ever be legitimate and have the funds they claim to want. I’m sure there would be a lot of legalese involved, but you never know…
The Cubs have some of the most dedicated fans in all of sports. Now they want a piece..and they’re dead serious. If you’ve ever wanted to become a real owner versus one that sits in an armchair, here’s your chance. Visit the site and enter your bid, you might just be a part owner of the Chicago Cubs one day.
