It’s not everyday that you see NFL players lose their composure while being interviewed. Then again, most NFL players do not encounter the same freak injuries that Bears safety Mike Brown has in four of his eight years. I knew the Bears defense was good, but not as good as the display they put on against the Chargers. Now, the Bears lose one of their biggest leaders..again.
You have to feel sorry for this guy. In his first four years, he never missed a game. In the last four years he hasn’t played a season and a half. He made his name known in his second year when the Bears went 13-3 with 2 huge INT returns for touchdowns against San Francisco and Cleveland. He was one of the fundamental cornerstones of what now is considered one of the best defenses in the NFL.
Brown is signed through 2008, but its a sure bet he’s played his last game in a Bears uniform, especially with the developing Danieal Manning Jr. Still, Brown was considered one of the best safeties in the game coming into this season with great secondary smarts, leadership qualities, hard hits, and the ability to change a game on his own.
The departure of Brown this year is vastly different than last year. When Brown was injured against Arizona, the Bears were left with Chris Harris, Danieal Manning Jr., and Todd Johnson at the safety position. Both Johnson and Harris are gone. This year, however, the Bears have some depth with Adam Archuleta at strong safety and Danieal Manning Jr. has a year under his belt. Manning Jr. was exploited last year, however, his speed should help in matchups with speedy receivers down field. When Brown and Tommie Harris were out last season, the Bears run defense was seriously suspect. Fortunately, the Bears will have Archuleta who has good ability to sit in the box and stop the run.
Not only is Brown out on IR, so is second year DT Dusty Dvoracek. This guy still has not been able to prove his worth due to injuries. The Bears lost Ian Scott, Tank Johnson, and Alfonso Boone in the off season and hopefully Darwin Walker, Anthony Adams, and Antonio Garay will be able to fill the void.
Jerry Angelo and the Bears took a risk letting players at the defensive tackle and safety position go. Talk about bad karma. Hopefully, the defense doesn’t miss a beat.

This hurts because Dusty and Brown were awesome against the Chargers. Good think they have good depth at d-tackle and safety.
