I always enjoy getting up-to-date news from Robert Feder regarding local area news stations and related journalists, however, I was quite dismayed at learning that Mike North is going to be profiled nationally.

According to Robert Feder, Mike North (WSCR 670 AM) is going to be profiled on “Bob Costas Now” on HBO.
A crew from HBO’s “Bob Costas Now” will turn up today in the studios of Mike North’s morning show on CBS Radio sports/talk WSCR-AM (670). North is being profiled among the most influential sports talk show hosts in the country.
Really? Most influential? Obviously, Bob Costas didn’t ask people in Chicago. If he did, he’d find quite the contrary. Its amazing that Mike North is even on the air anymore.
Back in the day, I used to listen to the guy (mostly due to the fact that the SCORE was really the only dedicated sports station around in Chicago on 820 AM) and thought it was a nice touch having a “Chicago Guy” reflecting on Chicago Sports. It didn’t take long to realize that this was simply a guy with limited education, an embellished Chicago accent, and someone filled with racial and gender specific overtones.
To be fair, Mike North is simply a guy who got lucky. He went from being someone wearing an apron and dishing hot dogs, while giving his side of the story of Chicago sports, near Schurz High School to a well-known (unfortunately) morning sports radio host.
Unfortunately, things started to go downhill for North starting in 2002 after he signed a million dollar plus contract. The mega contract further inflated his ego his deameanour on the air got even worse. In 2004, he moved to mornings to compete with ESPN (Mike and Mike) which was a huge failure due to the fact that no co-host was even remotely able to keep him on track and with anything relevant to sports. In 2006, North decided to make a racial slur referencing Cubs pitcher Jae Kuk Ryu. North tried to defend himself (in his most usual, uneducated, and non-politcally correct way) and even got his former high school involved when they were trying to recognize his attendance by naming a field after him.
“I don’t get it,” he said. “I grew up in the streets, and we used to say that all the time. I’ve got buddies living in Chinatown who are Italian. Wait, can I say ‘Chinatown’?
That’s right. Mike North never gets it. In May of 2007, he even went a tad farther to stir the pot with White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen. To North’s defense, he was dead on for reprimanding Guillen for his tirade and vulgar language; however, North went out of bounds declaring that Guillen “show him respect”. Not to say that Guillen is anybody special, but who the heck is Mike North? Unfortunately, he forgot that he’s just a guy that got lucky after a stint selling hot dogs.
Add North’s “Jagbag” and “Who Ya Crappin’” to the mix and its clearly easy to see why his show is simply nothing more than just a complete waste of time to any Chicago Sports fan.
Unfortunately, I’m sure Bob Costas and his crew had a hard time finding another sports radio host to pick from in Chicago, but I just don’t see how a bumb like Mike North can even sit in the same room as an accomplished professional like Bob Costas. Obviously, North was picked due to being the most controversial in Chicago, not the best or most influential.
In either case, North continues to laugh all the way to the bank, regards himself as a local “celebrity” in the Edison Park neighborhood, and brags about his days as a pretty good 16″ softball player back in the day (just ask anyone who remembers him when he played for Furman Funeral Home:).
I’ll make sure to miss his usual chance to look stupid on television and make Chicago look bad when he’s on HBO.

Not sure why you added Who Ya Crappin in the post as that is not a North bit.
I don’t think he is lucky at all. You don’t survive 15+ years on Chicago radio by being lucky.
His morning show has been much better since I started listening to it again, after they released Anne Maxfield. In the car to work I got to hear interviews with Bo Ryan and Bill Self within a half-hour.
I’d say prepare to deal with him some more because he’s not going anywhere. He makes bank for the Score.

Mike North used to do Who Ya Crappin. In regards to being lucky, he is. I cant think of too many people who went from sligning hot dogs to a focus of a radio station. I do give him credit in terms of being on the station for 15+ years, but with all the departures on the Score (Memelo, J Hood, Mac, etc.) who else do they have? Tom Shear, Terry Boers, and Mike Murphy? He’s been fortunate to have Jiggets, Buffone, and O’Bradovich in his corner to help keep things inline.
Personally, I find his show to be pretty juvenile and geared for the creepy 35-50 male who likes a bit of sports and racial/gender specific overtones.
Try Mike & Mike and Waddle/Silverman…much better journalism and actual sports listening.

[…] Windy City Sports Blog tears Mike North a new one. Surprisingly, I defend North. I’m actually enjoying his show very much these days. Within a half-hour this morning on the ride to work I heard interviews with Bo Ryan and Bill Self. […]

No thanks. I don’t really care for either of those shows. And I still don’t think North ever did Who Ya Crappin. It was Boers and McNeil then Boers and Bernstein.
You don’t think Tom Shaer still works at the Score, do you?

Then what is the argument here? You apparently like the guy, I personally don’t. My point in the post was that (unfortunately) Mike North would be representing Chicago radio on HBO and with Bob Costas. Like the guy or not, I don’t think anyone would want him speaking on behalf of Chicago. See: Barack Obama and Rev. Wright.
Yes, Mike North did Who Ya Crappin. I never said that he originated it or made it “famous”, but I’ve heard him do it a multitude of times on the air. By the way, its not a show or anything, its simply a phrase.
In any case, I’d recommend buying a car with XM…its so much nicer to listen to.

For the last time, and this is indisputable…Mike North has never had a segment or bit called Who you Crappin’. Please get your facts correct.
I am not a fan of Mike North the person but I do listen to his show because at least he has an opinion and I respect that he says what is on his mind. If I wanted a bland and uninteresting response to everything, I could find that on alot of stations. With that said, North has some racist views and is wrong on so many levels.
The strip club ads are not needed and need to go.
No one represents Chicago but rather represents themselves. I don’t see a Native American and think Montana. Why would anyone equate one person with one city?

I think Mike has been and is still entertaining. I think he hits way to many racial notes, but I enjoy the rants on non sports issues to break the dull drums. He almost made me run out to get a copy og Maxium Magazine the other day, and I do follow he and Bee’s resteraunt picks from time to time. Basta Pasta or whatever sucked, but the Gaye St. Inn was a good dine. And I dont think Tom Share or Giggets are around anymore. He seems to have a hard time meshing with anyone else as a regular co host…Fred and Jen are basically yes people……but he’s more than capable of carrying the show by his self. Can someome please give me more detail on what happened to Ann Maxfield, I really wanted to see if that would have ever jelled, but she was definately not a yes person, and dared to have a differnt opinion. For what it’s worth…I dont remember North doing “who you crapping either” maybe “Jagbag.
